Assam Congress MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed suspended over 'repeatedly violating' party's discipline

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee suspended its MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed for “repeatedly violating” the party’s discipline. The suspension comes a day after he was sent to two-day police custody by the court.
Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on Monday suspended its MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed with immediate effect for “repeatedly violating” the party’s discipline. APCC president Bhupen Kumar Borah, by an order, suspended Ahmed from the Congress, party general secretary Bobbeeta Sharma said.A local court in Guwahati on Sunday sent Congress MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed to two days in police custody following his arrest the previous day. He was produced before the Kamrup Chief Judicial Magistrate court.Ahmed was arrested from his official residence for allegedly making provocative remarks in reference to the recent eviction drive in Darrang district.While reacting to the eviction drive in Dholpur area, Ahmed told the media that eight people who were killed by suspected Bangladeshi immigrants in Dholpur area in 1983 during Assam agitation, were not martyrs, but Ghatok (killers).ALSO READ: Assam: Police detain Congress MLA for provocative remarks over Dholpur eviction drive
At least 28 FIRs were lodged against him at different police stations in the state for his provocative and communal statements.On Sunday, the Assam Congress Legislature Party (ACLP) unanimously recommended that the APCC take disciplinary action against Ahmed for “repeatedly violating party discipline”, a release said.
