Asia Cup 2022: Pakistan's Mohammad Rizwan finished his campaign in Asia Cup 2022 as the leading run-scorer after surpassing India's Virat Kohli, who earlier scored a century against Afghanistan.
Pakistan's Mohammad Rizwan finished his campaign in Asia Cup 2022 as the leading run-scorer. Before the final against Sri Lanka on Sunday, September 11, Rizwan was 50 runs short of Virat Kohli’s tally of 276 runs in the multi-nation tournament in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
While the Men in Green were chasing 171 to win the championship, Rizwan notched his third half-century in the Asia Cup off 47 balls. He smashed Chamika Karunaratne for a massive six to get to the milestone.
The six also made sure that he went past Kohli, who earlier scored a century against Afghanistan in the Super Four match in Dubai. However, just when he was looking to step on the gas and take the match away from Sri Lanka, he perished.
Rizwan tried to sweep Wanindu Hasaranga over the deep mid-wicket region, but couldn’t time the ball to perfection. Danushka Gunathilaka took a decent catch under pressure at the boundary.
Rizwan scored 55 runs off 49 balls with the help of four fours and one six. The veteran finished the tournament with 281 runs from six matches at an average of 56.20 and a strike rate of 117.57 with a top score of an unbeaten 78 against Hong Kong at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.
Rizwan’s knock on Sunday, however, went in vain as Sri Lanka beat Pakistan by 23 runs at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Pakistan started their Super Four campaign with a five-wicket win over Rohit Sharma’s India, after which they beat Afghanistan in a thriller.
However, Dasun Shanaka’s Sri Lanka didn’t allow Babar Azam’s Pakistan to get the better of them in the last two matches of the Asia Cup.
