Asia Cup 2022: Babar Azam was appointed as the Pakistan skipper in T20Is back in 2019 after Sarfaraz Ahmed was removed as the captain.
Pakistan skipper Babar Azam is on the verge of becoming his country’s most successful skipper in T20Is. The 27-year-old currently has 26 wins from 41 matches with a win percentage of 72.22. While he lost 10 of those games, five matches ended with no result.
Sarfaraz Ahmed, who was removed as captain in 2019, remains Pakistan's most successful skipper in the shorter format. The veteran led the Men in Green for three years from 2016 to 2019, where he garnered 29 wins from 37 matches with a win percentage of 78.37.
The Lahore-born Babar has a golden chance of surpassing Sarfaraz’s tally during the Asia Cup 2022 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Pakistan are set to start their campaign against Rohit Sharma’s India on Sunday, August 28 at Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
Apart from his captaincy record, Babar is also within touching distance of becoming the second Pakistan batter to score 8000 plus runs in T20s. The right-handed batter is only 120 runs short of the feat. Shoaib Malik is currently the leading T20 run-getter from Pakistan.
Pakistan and Babar, in the meantime, have faced quite a few challenges before the start of the Asia Cup. Their fast bowlers, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Mohammad Wasim Jr. were ruled out due to a knee and back injury respectively.
Mohammad Hasnain and Hasan Ali were roped in as replacements for Shaheen and Wasim Jr. Pakistan are placed in Group A along with India and Hong Kong, who qualified for the main event after beating Kuwait, UAE and Singapore in the Qualifier in Oman.
