Sources close to Ashok Gehlot say he may file his papers on Monday to run for the October 17 election, but he is still hoping to persuade Rahul Gandhi to return as chief.
The sources say Rahul Gandhi is the Chief Minister's first choice for the top party post. He is "trying to persuade Rahul Gandhi" to contest ahead of nominations, say the sources.
Mr Gehlot, a staunch Gandhi family loyalist, has repeatedly been asked by Sonia Gandhi to take charge of the party, but he has concerns about giving up the Chief Minister's job and his rival Sachin Pilot taking over in Rajasthan, sources say.
