As Charaka Shapath vs Hippocratic Oath controversy erupts again, here is all you need to know
India Today
After Madurai medical college students took the Maharishi Charaka Shapath, instead of the Hippocratic Oath, controversy has erupted around this ancient ayurvedic text again.
The Maharishi Charaka Shapath has been heavily criticised for being regressive and unsuitable to the ethics of modern medical practice. It is an ancient ayurvedic text that also contains an oath, which a disciple must take in the presence of his teacher, before beginning his medical studies.
According to modern medical ethics, the Charaka Shapath is commonly considered to be regressive and discriminatory.
Recently, the Maharishi Charaka Shapath came back into the news on April 30, when, instead of the conventional Hippocratic oath, several medical students who were starting their education at the Madurai medical college took the Maharshi Charaka Shapath. Here is a tweet by Tamil Nadu minister Thiaga Rajan, who was present at the event.
And I see the usual Cultist suspects have started their lies (posting fake versions of the oath to show it was innocuous) and propaganda (claiming it had nothing non-scientific or retrograde)Just to remove any doubt, here is the version that was read out, which raised concern https://t.co/moWtUlCLye pic.twitter.com/SryxRjtwsx
This created a huge controversy, and amidst this, the college’s dean, Mr Rathinavel, was dismissed.
