Arunachal Chief Minister Reveals Siang River Barrage Plan To Counter Chinese Dam

Some experts have called China's mega dam and hydropower project on the Yarlung Tsangpo River a "ticking water bomb for residents downstream", referring to people in Arunachal, Assam and even Bangladesh.
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Thursday warned the state Assembly of environmental disasters, including floods, for his state and neighbouring Assam if India does not respond to China's building a mega dam on the Yarlung Tsangpo River in Tibet's Medog district.
The Tsangpo flows through Tibet before entering Arunachal Pradesh as the Siang. It becomes the Brahmaputra in Assam and the Jamuna in Bangladesh before it empties into the Bay of Bengal.
To counter what some experts have called a "ticking water bomb for residents downstream (in Arunachal and Assam)", the centre plans to build a large barrage - a low-lying structure with gates to control the flow of water - across the Siang, Mr Khandu said as he sought support for the idea.
