Arrangements in place to streamline traffic during Corniche Street closure: Ashghal

To facilitate the fan activities that will be held along the Corniche during the FIFA Arab Cup, Corniche Street will be closed from 26 November to 4 December, the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy said in a press meet Sunday. Speaking during the conference, Eng. Mohd. Al Marri, Design Engineer at the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) said  40 plus intersections are programmed and simulated to achieve higher traffic flow and billboards with live updates are being installed to show road status and to support traffic control during the closure. Al Marri added that more than 110 recycled sign boards are installed along the road. About 50 variable message signs will be used. Systems are developed to detect vehicle queues and reduce waiting times at signals enhancing traffic control on roads, at traffic lights, and at yellow box at intersections. For informing and rerouting commuters during the closure, some construction works are being implemented. This is to enhance traffic flow, and facilitate movement of new buses on Corniche. Meanwhile, Ashghal will be continuing to implement Corniche Beautification and Development Project, including construction of four pedestrian tunnels for boosting pedestrian movement and facilitating pedestrian crossing on Corniche Street, Al Marri said. Ashghal team is constructing 3 open plazas along Corniche with magnificent designs attracting visitors, he said. The plazas will have many artworks that highlight Qatar’s historical and cultural identity and heritage, besides pedestrian paths and tunnels, and connected bicycle paths. Al Marri said Ashghal has added Exceptional Permits Service during closure for affected entities through e-portal of its Customer Service portal. Dedicated number 188 is allocated through Ashghal Call Centre for Corniche closing service, to facilitate and expedite response.
