Archbishop Joseph Pamplany appointed Metropolitan vicar of Syro-Malabar Church, arrives at Archbishop's House amidst rebel priests' presence.
Archbishop Joseph Pamplany who has been appointed Metropolitan vicar of the Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church Rapahael Thattil arrived at the Archbishop’s House in the city on Sunday (January 12, 2025). He was accompanied by former Apostolic Administrator Bishop Bosco Puthur who stepped down from the position and the Major Archbishop.
The trio of top church functionaries arrived as police kept vigil and blocked the entrance gate to everyone except those permitted to enter the premises.
The bishops arrived as a group of rebel priests stayed inside the premises after entering it on Saturday in the midst of police action to evict them.
Archbishop Pamplany is expected to take charge as the vicar of the Major Archbishop on Sunday and his arrival at the Bishop’s house is linked to his new position, church sources said.
He has been widely welcomed by the rebels as a leader who can reconcile the ongoing strife in the Archdiocese over the Mass liturgy issue.
Pamplanys appointment was confirmed on Saturday at the end of the 33rd synod of the Syro-Malabar Church. Pope Fracis’ acceptance of Bishop Puthurs desire to step down on health grounds was also announced on Saturday.
