Apple iPhone 14 Pro models to reportedly feature dual punch-hole display design
India Today
It is being said that Apple will ditch the notched display design for the iPhone 14 series and opt for a punch-hole display design.
Now that Apple has launched the affordable iPhone SE 3, the focus will now fully be on this year’s flagship models. The iPhone 14 series, which will arrive later this year, has already been leaked several times. Now, it is being said that Apple might ditch the notched display design and opt for a punch-hole display design. However, the regular iPhone 14 model might not receive the design upgrade. Popular display analyst Ross Young says that the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Pro Max will get the pill-shaped cutout.
Further, the high-end iPhone models are said to come with a dual-hole design. The first one will be a pill-shaped hole housing the Face ID module and the second one will feature the front camera for selfies. The vanilla model could retain the notch design, similar to the iPhone 13 series.
The cited source says that the iPhone 15 models that will make their debut next year will also get a dual punch-hole setup and the cut-out will reportedly be smaller than this year to offer users more screen space. Though, there is no information on how much Apple might be planning to reduce it. The analyst did suggest that the cut out on the iPhone 14 Pro models could measure in at 5.631mm.
In the future, the analyst believes that Apple could remove the standard Face ID unit and opt for under display facial authentication. So, there will be no hole on the front for the Face ID module. However, under-display Face ID is expected to arrive before 2023.
"This does require panel redesign for Face ID to operate at high accuracy," Young wrote. "Perhaps the most critical area is replacing the conventional Yb/MgAg cathode on top of the OLED stack, which is not very transmissive in IR regions."
Young says that Apple could use a different pattern for the cathodes that drive the OLED pixels, instead of using a “backside laser drilling.” Until now, Apple has reportedly finalized one supplier for mass production, but under-display Face ID isn’t expected to arrive early as Apple usually prefers dual source components to cut down the costs and it still needs to find a solution to the above-mentioned issue.
The rumor mill suggests that the iPhone 14 series will be made available with up to 2TB storage option. The upcoming iPhone models are also said to come with 120Hz LTPO OLED panels. The standard could pack a 6.1-inch display, whereas the iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max model might offer a 6.7-inch screen. These devices will likely be powered by the A16 Bionic chip.
