Congress and AITC State convener P.V. Anvar join forces against CPI(M) in Nilambur byelection, with UDF support.
The Congress and All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) State convener P.V. Anvar have reached an understanding to work together against the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] in the Nilambur byelection.
Discussions held between the Congress leaders and Mr. Anvar in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday sorted out the issue of giving a formal berth in the United Democratic Front (UDF) for Mr. Anvar by convincing him of the UDF’s position towards the AITC. However, the Congress leadership has given certain assurances to Mr. Anvar in view of the upcoming local body elections, followed by the Assembly elections in 2026.
Mr. Anvar has dropped his insistence on Malappuram District Congress Committee (DCC) president V.S. Joy as the UDF candidate in Nilambur. Instead, he has pledged to support whoever the UDF fields in Nilambur. “Suggesting Mr. Joy’s name was only a request we made. Anyone can make such requests. It is for the Congress to decide,” he said.
“The discussions we held were absolutely positive. We are all happy. We reached an understanding to work together against ‘Pinarayism’ in the State,” said Mr. Anvar.
He said that the UDF and the Trinamool Congress shared a common goal in Kerala—to defeat the CPI(M) and “Pinarayism.” He expressed his support for the UDF in Nilambur, saying “the Congress will decide its candidate, and I will give full support.”
After the discussions, Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan said that Mr. Anvar’s support would be crucial for the UDF in Nilambur. However, he said a final decision about the nature of cooperation with the former MLA would be made after discussions with the UDF constituents.
Mr. Anvar expressed concerns that the CPI(M) and the BJP might collude, with the Election Commission’s support, to potentially avoid the Nilambur byelection, stating that such suspicions appeared valid given the current circumstances.
