India Today
Anurag Kashyap said why YRF films such as Thugs of Hindostan and Shamshera are turning out at BO duds. He also spoke about Aditya Chopra and said that he needs to stop controlling everything.
YRF films aren’t doing well at the box office. Films like Thugs of Hindostan, Samrat Prithviraj, Shamshera turned out as box office disasters. Well, this ain’t a good time for Bollywood either. Amid such trying times, Anurag Kashyap is busy promoting his upcoming film Dobaaraa, which stars Taapsee Pannu in the lead. The filmmaker never minces his words in interviews. Recently, the actor shared what’s wrong with the industry and why YRF films are falling flat. The actor also shared what YRF Head Aditya Chopra must do in this situation.
YRF-led films are flopping at the box office in spite of investing crores in filming and production. Anurag Kashyap, who is all set for the release of his upcoming film with Taapsee Pannu, Dobaaraa, shared why Thugs of Hindostan and Shamshera tanked. The filmmaker also said that Aditya Chopra shouldn’t control everything. Speaking to Galatta Plus, Anurag said, “In Bollywood, cinema is largely controlled by those people and that too second generation that has grown up in trial rooms. They have not lived life so the referencing is based on cinema. So what is not on screen can't be cinema to them. The biggest problem with YRF is the trial room effect. You take a story and you want to make a Pirates of the Caribbean out of it, so it becomes Thugs of Hindostan. You take a story and you want to make Mad Max: Fury Road out of it, it becomes Shamshera. The same Shamshera would have worked two-three years back, at least much more than how it has worked on. Now, people are exposed to OTT."
He also said, "You have one person sitting in a cave, who doesn’t know the world outside, dictating how everybody should be making their films and telling them what to do. Obviously, you’re digging your own grave. You have to empower people, you can’t dictate terms. That time is passe now. If Aditya Chopra has hired a bunch of people, he needs to empower them and not dictate them, not control the casting, not control everything. Sit in your office, hire good people if you trust them, and let them make their film. Which is the mistake he makes. He doesn’t let them (be)."
In an exclusive conversation with India Today.in, Taapsee Pannu and Anurag Kashyap spoke about how they look at the new boycott trend prevalent in Bollywood. Giving the question a humorous spin, Taapsee told us, “Please everyone boycott our film, Dobaaraa. I want to be in the same league as Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha and Akshay Kumar’s Rakshabandhan. I feel left out.“ Anurag too added, “Yes please, I want our film to trend on the boycott hashtag as well.”
They also questioned if the people who speak about boycott and cancel culture are part of the real audience for their movies. “I want to know if those people who call for a boycott are the ones who even watch films in theatres?", both Taapsee and Anurag asked. In fact, Twitter genie granted their wish and recently trended 'Cancel Dobaaraa' ahead of the film's release.
