
Another record 263 new COVID-19 cases in the London area Thursday, no deaths

The Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) is reporting a record number of new COVID-19 cases for the second day in a row Thursday, with 263 infections. There were no additional deaths reported.
The sharp rise in COVID-19 cases began about two weeks ago, following the confirmation of the Omicron variant in the region. There have been 1,875 cases reported in Middlesex-London so far in December, nearly five times the number of cases posted in November.
The MLHU reported 78 recoveries on Thursday, with 1,318 active cases in the region. The highest number of active cases in Middlesex-London was on Feb. 7, during the second wave of the pandemic with 1,822.
The seven-day rolling average for daily cases is up to a record 161.
The majority of new cases reported Thursday are among people aged 40 to 64 (83 cases), followed by people aged 25 to 39 (69 cases), according to data from the health unit.
There were 14 cases reported among people aged 65 and older.
London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) is caring for 15 people with COVID-19, up two from the previous day, including six adult patients in critical care and five or fewer patients in the Children's Hospital.
There are currently 54 staff at the hospital network who have tested positive and are isolating, up 18 from the previous day.
No active outbreaks have been declared at London hospitals.
The LHSC says hospitals remain open, and those in need of urgent or emergent care should not delay getting treatment.
Southwestern Public Health is reporting 89 new COVID-19 cases and no additional deaths on Wednesday. There are 397 ongoing cases in the region, with 112 in St. Thomas, 91 in Woodstock and 31 in Ingersoll. There are 12 patients in hospital, including four in critical care, according to the health unit.
Huron Perth Public Health posted 36 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, with 119 ongoing infections in the region.
Meanwhile, Ontario reported a record 5,790 are COVID-19 on Thursday, toppling the previous high of 4,812 on Apr. 16, 2021. There were seven additional deaths reported by the Ministry of Health.
The number of patients being treated for COVID-related illnesses who are in critical care is up to 169, up one from the previous day. The seven-day rolling average for daily cases across the province is up to 4,002.
