Marci Ien gave Munch More Media two contracts for constituency communications while the sister of firm’s owner worked as senior staffer.
A second Liberal minister gave thousands in contracts to a foodie firm with family ties to a senior staffer in Housing Minister Ahmed Hussen’s office, Global News has learned.
Marci Ien, the minister of women and gender equality, gave $10,000 in constituency contracts to Munch More Media, a Toronto-based public relations firm specializing in promoting the restaurant and food services industry.
Global News reported Thursday that the director of Munch More Media, Hiba Tariq, is the sister of Tia Tariq, who has held several senior staffer roles in the Liberal government over the last six years.
Hussen’s York South—Weston constituency office gave Munch More Media at least $93,050 in taxpayer-funded constituency money since January 2021, a Global News analysis of public expense records showed.
Ien gave two contracts to Munch More Media, according to expense records — one in March 2021 for $7,000, and one in July 2021 for $3,000.
Lobbying records list Tia Tariq as Ien’s director of policy in May 2021.
She now works as director of policy for Hussen.
Ien’s office told Global News that Munch More Media was hired following the minister’s October 2020 byelection win to provide “communications and advertising support” for her newly-formed constituency office.
