As protests erupted across the state over remarks on Prophet Muhammad by Nupur Sharma, the West Bengal Police registered an FIR against the now suspended BJP spokesperson.
A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma at Contai Police Station in East Midnapore. The FIR has been filed over a complaint by Abu Sohel, general secretary of TMC minority cell.
The FIR has been registered under Sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups), 504 (intentional provocation leading to disruption of public peace), 505 (public mischief), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.
Protests erupted across West Bengal over remarks on Prophet Muhammad by Nupur Sharma. The protests soon took a violent turn, with the demonstrators setting a BJP office on fire in Howrah. Protesters also vandalised a local train in Nadia district and looted shops in Murshidabad on Sunday.

Earlier, when protesters had blocked the National Highway at Howrah, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had urged the protesters not to harass the public by blocking roadways, and go protest in New Delhi and BJP-ruled states instead.
"I condemn the recent heinous and atrocious hate speech remarks by a few disastrous BJP leaders, resulting in not only spread of violence, but also division of the fabric of the country, leading to disturbance of peace and amity," Mamata Banerjee said in a series of tweets.
The speech of the BJP leaders has tarnished the image of India across the globe, the Bengal CM asserted.
