The Calcutta High Court has refused to transfer the murder case of student leader Anish Khan to the CBI for a probe. The court ordered the SIT to carry on with the investigation.
The Calcutta High Court refused to transfer the murder case of 28-year-old student leader Anish Khan to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for probe. The high court on Tuesday said that there is no need to transfer the murder probe to the CBI.
Calcutta HC judge Rajashekhar Mantha stated that primary reports suggest there was no attempt to influence the investigation. The court has ordered the state government-appointed Special Investigative Team (SIT) to carry on with the investigation and file a charge sheet as soon as possible.
On March 18, a student leader, Anish Khan, died after he was allegedly thrown off the roof of his house by unidentified people in West Bengal's Howrah district. Anish Khan was an alumnus of Aliah University in Kolkata and was associated with the student wing of the Indian Secular Front (ISF) led by Furfura Sharif cleric Abbas Siddiqui. He was also involved in the anti-CAA movement.
The mysterious death of Khan sparked a widespread protest movement across West Bengal, thereby mounting pressure on the government.
His death triggered protests in Kolkata as students of Aliah University took out a candlelight march from the varsity campus in Park Circus to Entally.
After his death, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee ordered the constitution of a SIT to investigate the death of Khan. Two people were also arrested in connection with his murder.
CPI (M) Rajya Sabha MP and former mayor of Kolkata Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharjee filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Calcutta High Court over the death of student leader Anish Khan near Kolkata. Speaking to India Today TV, Bhattacharjee said that investigation by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) will not do justice to the probe.
