Das Stückchen Hoffnung, das ihn im Fall einer nuklearen Katastrophe retten soll, trägt der Koch Alexander Benda wie einen Schatz in seinem Geldbeutel. Eine Jodtablette, verpackt in einer weißen, zentimetergroßen Hülle. Zu jeder Tageszeit sei sie griffbereit, sagt Benda, und „ich will einfach glauben, dass die Pille mich rettet“. Die Tablette sorge dafür, dass radioaktives Jod nicht die Schilddrüse schädige.
Der 26-Jährige steht auf der Veranda des kleinen Cafés „Bereg“ in Nikopol im Südosten der Ukraine. Hinter ihm stapeln sich Pizzastücke auf den Tellern ukrainischer Soldaten, vor ihm schwappen kleine Wellen des Dnipro ans Ufer. Da drüben, sagt Benda und zeigt auf die Umrisse mehrerer Gebäude am Horizont sei das Atomkraftwerk Saporischschja. „Da sind jetzt die Russen.“
