Google is promising to offer a lot more with the upcoming release while keeping “privacy and security, as well as developer productivity” the key focus.
The upcoming Android OS offers features such as better Material You-themed icons, new language controls, a new photo picker, new Wi-Fi permission, and more. The early preview of Android 13 is for developers rather than for regular users. So, if you are excited about this Android version, then it is better to wait for the beta version at least.
The search giant has already revealed the release timeline for Android 13 to help developers understand when Google plans to make the new operating system available to the public. The company will first release two developer previews of Android 12 over the course of February and March. It will then roll out the beta version starting in April.
The stable version of Android 13 is expected to be ready by July, as per the details revealed by Google. Android 13 could be made available to other Android device manufacturers sometime as early as August. So, non-Pixel users can expect the release in September or October this year.
The official release for the public will take place later in the year and if you are a Pixel user, then you will be able to get your hands on Android 13 a little earlier than other Android users. It should be noted that Google recently dropped software support for both the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL smartphones. So, they will not receive the latest Android OS update.
Google has already confirmed the list of devices that will continue to receive software updates in the future. The Pixel 6 will get Android version updates and security patches until October 2024, whereas the Pixel 5a 5G will be eligible until August 2024. Google will drop software support for the Pixel 4a (5G) after November 2023.
This year, the Pixel 3a will receive the last software update in May and the Google Pixel 4 series will stop receiving updates after October. Those who own a Pixel 5 should note that this flagship will remain eligible for software updates until October 2023.
