A mother in Andhra Pradesh's Kadapa district donated her kidney to save her son's life.
A 56-year-old mother donated her kidney to save the life of her son suffering from Kidney failure. The patient, identified as Shiva Keshava, had been suffering from kidney failure for the last two years and needed a transplant.
The family belonging to Pulivendula region of Andhra Pradesh's Kadapa district came to Citizens hospital for treatment. As Keshava's condition worsened, doctors suggested a kidney transplant.
His mother became the donor after the doctors convinced her that she wouldn't face any health issues in the future.
Dr Mallikarjun Reddy said, ‘’Though there was no scientific proof, we have seen mother organs working better than organs donated by a sibling or else. We see emotional connection, a reason.’’
The robotic surgery was done using a minimally invasive technique to prevent postoperative pain, infection and faster recovery for both the donor and the recipient/patient.
Robot-Assisted Kidney Transplantation (RAKT) requires a high level of medical expertise and surgeons were up to the task. Robotic surgery allows kidney transplantation to be performed under optimal operative conditions.
Elaborating on the procedure, Dr Reddy, said, “We have performed Laparoscopic-assisted Nephrectomy for the donor and Robot-assisted Renal Transplant Surgery for the recipient. With minimally invasive surgery, the chances of the patient getting a hernia are lower and morbidity is less."
