Arjun, a 20-year-old man from Andhra’s East Godavari district, hanged himself at home. His family alleged that he was beaten and tortured by the police for having a love affair with a neighbouring girl. After a preliminary probe, an inspector has been suspended.
A 20-year-old man hung himself at home in Andhra Pradesh’s East Godavari district on Tuesday, March 8. His family alleged that he took the extreme step after he was tortured by the police.
The family has alleged that Circle Inspector (CI) Durga Prasad of the Mandapeta police station brutally tortured Arjun, which forced him to take his own life. He was called to the station for having a love affair with a neighbouring girl.
According to East Godavari Superintendent of Police (SP), Ravindranath Babu, “The deceased was called in by the CI to the police station along with his mother based on a complaint given by the family of a 17-year-old girl.”
“He was counselled and sent back. Later, elders of both groups also met to resolve the issue. However, the boy, who was in love with the girl, killed himself as the girl's family did not agree to their marriage,” said the SP.

However, the boy’s family alleged that Arjun, who was called into the police station on Monday evening, was severely beaten up by policemen, and a stick was inserted inside him. Unable to stand this, he hung himself to death at his house.
Parents and relatives carried Arjun’s corpse and held a protest at the Lotus Centre in Mandapeta city. Police have registered a case against the inspector, a constable and the girl’s parents. Further investigations are on.
