
Analysis shows Manipur MLAs, ministers have doubled, tripled their wealth in last 5 years

An analysis by MyNeta shows that in Manipur, MLAs and ministers who are re-contesting, have doubled, and in some cases, even tripled, their assets and wealth in the last five years. Average percentage growth in assets for 60 re-contesting MLAs is 85%.
In the last 5 years, MLAs in Manipur have earned and collected huge assets, more than double their wealth in comparison to 2017. According to the MyNeta analysis of the assets reported in the affidavits of candidates in Manipur, MLAs and ministers have amassed huge assets while in power over the last five years.
There is an overall 2x-3x increase in the average income of re-contesting MLAs in Manipur. In 2017, the average assets of these 60 re-contesting MLAs fielded by various parties including independents was Rs 2.28 crore. In 2022, the average assets of these 60 re-contesting MLAs is Rs 4.22 crore.
The average percentage growth in assets for the 60 re-contesting MLAs is 85%. Across party lines, sitting MLAs now have at least twice the assets they had in 2017.
The highest percentage increase in assets according to the ADR report is shown by Naga People's Front (NPF) leader and forest minister in the Biren Singh government, Awangbow Newmai. His assets have shown an increase from approximately 22 lakhs in 2017 to over 3.97 crore in 2022. This is almost a 1,700% increase in five years.

The highest amount of growth, rupee-wise, is for Alfred Kanngam S Arthur of the Congress party, whose assets grew from 36.4 crore to 51.4 crores.
Kshetrimayum Biren Singh, who contested on a Congress ticket in 2017 and now on a JDU ticket, has grown his assets from 8 crore to 16 crores.
