Anaikuttam dam shutter replacement to be completed by April-end, with a capacity of 125 mcft serving 4,500 acres.
Work on replacement of nine shutters of Anaikuttam dam is expected to be completed by April-end.
The work of fitting all the nine shutters, measuring 10 metres by 2.75 metres, along with motors for operating them has been over. The final alignment of the I-section shutters was underway when Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu, along with Virudhunagar Collector V.P. Jeyaseelan, inspected the work on Thursday. The renovation work, on an outlay of ₹28.20 crore, began in last July.
Work on construction of the dam, located in Anaikkutam village in Sivakasi taluk, started in 1984 and it was commissioned in 1989. The dam has a catchment area of 591 sq km with a capacity of 125 mcft. The nine shutters have been designed for a maximum discharge of 60,000 cusecs.
The shutters had to be replaced after leakage of water continued for several years.
The storage of 125.75 mcft with 7.5 metres of depth of water can serve 4,500 acres of farm lands.
Virudhunagar MLA A.R.R. Srinivasan, Sivakasi Mayor I. Sangeetha, Executive Engineer of Vaippar Basin Division C. Malarvizhi and Assisant Executive Engineer V.K. Karthikeyan were among those who were present.
The Minister also distributed retrofitted petrol scooters worth ₹90.10 lakh to 85 differently abled persons in Sivakasi. He also gave away National Identity Cards to 84 beneficiaries.
