The busiest streets in Sri Lanka were empty on Sunday after the government imposed a 36-hour curfew amid the nation's worst economic crisis in recent history.
Massive shortages, skyrocketing prices and growing discontent - Sri Lanka is facing its worst economic crisis in recent history. In the face of the same, the people have taken to the streets and a nationwide anti-government protest was called on Sunday.
In light of the same, the Sri Lankan government imposed a 36-hour curfew in the country. The island-wide curfew was imposed with effect from 6 pm on Saturday to 6 am Monday (April 4), the information department said.
As a result of the same, the busiest of streets in Sri Lanka fell silent on Sunday. Only security personnel could be seen on the roads.
But not every place in Sri Lanka was deserted on Sunday. The situation was quite the opposite at petrol pumps. People lined up in long queues to get fuel, as the country faces a critical shortage of the essential supply.
