Find out all about Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge who filed his nomination for the party's presidential post on Friday.
Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge emerged as a top runner for the party's presidential post on Friday. He filed his nomination at the party headquarters in Delhi, with the backing of many party leaders, including Digvijaya Singh, who was earlier slated to contest the elections.
Here's all we know about the current leader of Opposition:
Two days before July 21 this year, when grand preparations were made in Karnataka's Kalaburagi to celebrate his 80th birthday, Mallikarjun Kharge issued a statement. The statement by Kharge had a clear message — No celebrations. What was the reason? Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi was to appear before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) the next day, July 21.
On his birthday, the 80-year-old Congress leader was seen fighting from Sansad to sadak (Parliament to the streets) raising slogans against the Union government and later was detained by the Delhi Police.
“That’s Mallikarjun Kharge for you, a Mountain solid Congressi. He is fighting on the street and an inspiration for the younger generation of Congressmen,” said a senior party leader member then.
Kharge also shares a good equation with the Gandhis, especially Rahul Gandhi.
