Aligarh Muslim University professor apologises for 'mythical references' on rape in class

AMU professor Dr Jitesh Kumar has apologised for allegedly making references to Hindu gods in a slide about instances of rape in mythology.
Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) professor Dr Jitesh Kumar on Wednesday apologised for making 'mythical references' on rape in his presentation in a class. Dr Kumar of the Faculty of Medicine in a statement said his intention was not to hurt the religious sentiments of students and staff.
The incident pertains to a class on the topic of sexual offences, taken by professor Kumar for third year MBBS students, in which he allegedly made references to Hindu gods in a slide about instances of rape in mythology.

The university had issued a show cause notice to a professor for allegedly hurting religious sentiments of students and staff through his presentation.
“The Aligarh Muslim University administration and the Faculty of Medicine today strongly condemned the content of a slide on the mythical reference of rape and issued a show-cause notice to Dr Jitendra Kumar for hurting the religious sentiments of the students, staff and citizens. He has been asked to submit his reply in 24 hours,” the statement read.
The professor then apologised saying his intention was not to hurt any particular religious community.
"The reference was only to highlight that rape has been part of society since long, which I considered to be an inadvertent mistake on my part," he added.
