Polls open for first election since President Abdelaziz Bouteflika resigned amid boycott calls from Hirak movement.
Algerians have begun voting in the first parliamentary elections since longtime leader Abdelaziz Bouteflika was forced to resign two years ago, but the opposition Hirak movement has called for a boycott after seven of its leaders were arrested on Thursday. Polling stations opened at 8am (07:00 GMT) and are due to close at 7pm. About 24 million Algerians are eligible to vote to elect 407 members of the People’s National Assembly for a five-year term.More Related News
