The 2023 Alberta Climate Summit, which begins in Calgary on Thursday, will examine several key questions that have plagued provincial and federal relationships.
Key among them will be looking at how, and perhaps more importantly, how soon Alberta can achieve a net-zero electricity grid.
There will also be questions about how Alberta’s workforce can transition itself for a new energy future and how our province can achieve a clean and affordable electricity grid
At Thursday’s event Alberta Premier Danielle Smith will sit down with moderator Dave Kelly for a "fireside chat."
It may turn out to be a fiery chat, as Smith will undoubltedly be challenged for her government’s decision to halt the construction of wind and solar energy projects in the province.
The premier has, in the past, blasted the federal government for suggesting that a 2035 deadline for Alberta’s energy grid hitting net-zero is unattainable – and to that end, the province is running advertisments in other provinces, notably in Ontario, suggesting it could lead to sky high prices and even power shortages.
That’s where there could be fireworks as right after Smith speaks, Kelly will sit down with federal energy minister Jonathan Wilkinson.
