While the very word ‘Cannes’ reminds us of celebs, films, fashion, red carpets and premieres, the prestigious event isn’t devoid of controversies. From Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's purple lipstick to Hina Khan being trolled for her shimmery outfit on her Cannes debut, here are a few controversial Cannes moments from over the years. Our Monday Masala special.
It was in 2019 when Hina Khan made her Cannes debut. The actress was mocked by a magazine editor for her shimmery gown. “Cannes has suddenly become chandivali studios kya" — this comment received huge flak from Hina's fans and other TV artists. While Hina did mention she felt bad about the comment, the actress was later issued an apology.
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is a Cannes regular. The actress wore purple lipstick at Cannes 2016, and, as a result, was trolled left, right and centre. While some trolled the actress for her Cannes appearance, others made her a meme-favourite. In fact, some of them continue to go viral every now and then.
Back in 2015, Cannes received flak after it allegedly denied female guests entry for not wearing high heels to a film screening. This gave rise to numerous protests, following which, festival director Thierry Fremaux issued an apology. Many Bollywood actresses also commented on the matter. Kiara Advani said, “Personally, I love wearing heels on the red carpet. However, I do not support this compulsion. I understand the occasion's requirement is formal, but to enforce wearing heels is a little short of autocracy. Stature and elegance are inner traits; it would take more than heels to cultivate them.”
At Cannes 2013, jewellery worth $1 million was stolen from the hotel room of an employee of a popular jewellery brand. As per reports, thieves ripped the safe open where the jewellery was kept. Apart from this, a diamond necklace worth $2 million also disappeared during a star-studded Cannes bash.
