The Centre on Tuesday unveiled a new short-term recruitment policy for Indian youth to be a part of the armed forces for four years. Termed Agnipath, the scheme will allow youngsters between 17.5 to 21 years to be inducted into any of the three services as agniveers.
In a conversation with India Today, Navy Chief of Personnel Vice-admiral Dinesh K Tripathi talked about the selection procedure for the Indian Navy, perks, and other details about the scheme.
On the selection process in the Navy, Tripathi says, “We are planning to enroll agniveers from all parts of the nation utilising contemporary technology, practices, and systems, including specialised rallies and campus interviews at technical institutes to select the most capable youth.”
He adds that enrolment of ITI students, National Skill Qualification Framework candidates and NCC cadets into the Agnipath Scheme will be encouraged.
The Chief of the Naval Staff emphasizes the positive effect on technologically-inclined youths.
“On induction, the agniveers would be taken through a calibrated training curriculum which will enable them to transition quickly and effectively as war-fighters on board our frontline units. We feel after the initial four years of service they will carry with them intangible but equally important facets of leadership, teamwork, cohesion, diligence, and self-discipline in the society,” he says.
