Agnipath row in Chennai: TPDK cadres set fire to PM Modi’s effigy near Army HQ

Members of Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam in Tamil Nadu protested against the Agnipath scheme outside the Army HQ of the Southern Command on Tuesday. They were detained by the police for setting fire to an effigy of PM Modi.
A protest against the Agnipath recruitment scheme in Chennai, conducted by members of Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam (TPDK), turned ugly after cadres burnt an effigy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi near the Army headquarters on Tuesday, June 21. They were detained by the police, who were on high alert.
TPDK cadres gathered near the HQ of Dakshin Bharath (Southern Command) area amid a large Police presence. Protesters raised slogans against the Agnipath scheme and claimed it to be a Hereditary Education Policy.

Ravana Gopal, Ariyalur District Secretary of the TPDK, stated that Agnipath was a scheme that would promote casteism and would destroy the lives of young people.
Amidst the commotion, TPDK volunteers also set an effigy of PM Modi on fire, shocking police personnel present there. Two men on a motorbike dragged along a burning effigy and threw it near the protest site and escaped.
The protesters were later detained. However, police are still on high alert in the area.
The TPDK protest is the third one being held in Chennai against the Agnipath recruitment scheme.
