Students of IIT Madras showcased 60 innovative projects including hyperloop pods, sound rockets, autonomous shuttle vehicles after a two-year break.
Several hundred students visited the event where 60 innovative projects including hyperloop pods, sound rockets, autonomous shuttle vehicles, a bacterial cellulose based insulin patch were showcased.
Professor Kamakoti, the Director of IIT Madras stated that he was extremely happy to see students back in the campus after the Covid pandemic and that the 'Open House' is a way of encouraging students.
He said, “All these technologies they are showcasing here carry a lot of importance. For example, the Hyperloop tech you see here. If it becomes successful, travel from Chennai to Bengaluru will be completed in three minutes. We have a wide range of innovations spread across multiple departments and what is so exciting is that we are back after nearly two years of the campus being deserted. This brings in a lot of inter-disciplinary work."
One stall that garnered attention from visitors was that of team Abhyudhay, who are in the process of building a sound rocket to test a component which can convert vibration created by the rocket during take off to power the internal components such as altimeter and GPS.
“We will be testing the payload which will convert th vibration energy that is usually wasted during a rocket's motion and using the device called Vibragen which converts these forces into powering onboard equipment,” said Govind Jayakumar, who is leading the research on payload sub-system.
Team Raftar built RFR 20, the Formula car built by students which won a student race championship in the combustion category for the year 2020. Aravind, the team leader, stated that during the pandemic his team was designing an electric car system.
“Global community is pushing toward a sustainable energy future and so are we. We are working towards an electric car and our design has already won in several virtual competitions and as we are returning to the Institution, we are looking forward to building the car," stated Aravind.
