After a patient died at Howrah District Hospital, his family members allegedly damaged medical equipment and attacked the doctors on duty on Saturday night.
After a 57-year-old patient died at a government hospital in West Bengal’s Howrah district, his family members allegedly vandalised the district hospital and attacked doctors on Saturday night.
Claiming that the patient died due to medical negligence, the family members purportedly attacked two on-duty doctors. One doctor received an injury to his head while the other’s shoulder was dislocated. Both have been admitted to the hospital for treatment. They have been identified as Dr Pramit Basu and Dr Nabarun Majumdar.
The deceased patient’s family members also damaged medical equipment and threw an ECG machine.
The police rushed to the hospital on receiving information of the attack. The patient’s son Rohit, allegedly involved in the attack, has been arrested and will be produced in court.
Arup Roy, West Bengal minister and chairman of the patients’ welfare committee at the hospital, said, “The police have arrested the accused person as he took law into his hands post a patient’s death. It is very unfortunate, the patient died due to renal failure, as he couldn't take dialysis.”
A doctor at the hospital added, “Kartik Dey [patient] was undergoing dialysis treatment at Howrah Hospital, his health condition had been deteriorating since last evening. He died because of renal failure. And after his death, doctors were attacked.”
