After non-cooperation from Tamil Nadu government, NCPCR team to visit Thanjavur

The NCPCR team will inquire into the incident of the suicidal death of a minor girl.
A team of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) led by Priyank Kanoongo, Chairperson of NCPCR, is all set to visit Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu on January 30 and 31 to inquire into the incident of the suicidal death of a minor girl.
According to NCPCR sources, the visit comes in the wake of a non-cooperative attitude faced by the commission from Tamil Nadu.
As per a statement by the child rights panel, the Government of Tamil Nadu has been reluctant to extend the necessary facilities/support to the NCPCR team for the said inquiry into the incident on the pretext of imposition of the Model Code of Conduct which came into force due to Local Body Ordinary Elections in the State of Tamil Nadu.
The Commission upon its visit will inquire into the incident of the suicidal death of a minor girl, for which the concerned Superintendent of Police and Investigating Officer have been asked to ensure their presence. The Commission will also be meeting the parents of the deceased girl, interacting with the classmates of the deceased, meeting/interacting with the doctor who treated the girl before she died and the doctor who performed post-mortem of the deceased, meeting with the school authorities and also open to interact with the locals, willing to interact with the Commission.
"Since the state Government is not extending support to the visit of NCPCR, the Commission will arrange the above series of events at a designated place to be identified on reaching Thanajavur, which shall be made public through the NCPCR Social Media platform," said a statement of the NCPCR.
The child rights panel had received a complaint alleging that the minor girl was forced to illegally convert to Christianity and, upon opposing this conversion, corporal punishment was imposed on the girl. She was not allowed to go home and made to clean toilets and wash dishes by the school authorities. The complaint further says that as a result, the minor committed suicide by drinking pesticides.
