Active shooter sends Ponoka courthouse into lockdown
CBC
A person has been shot at a central Alberta courthouse Thursday morning.
Police were called to the Ponoka provincial court building Thursday morning, RCMP Cpl. Troy Savinkoff told CBC News.
One person was injured and taken to hospital following "the discharge of a firearm," Savinkoff said. The courthouse was locked down at around 9:45 a.m.
The victim was not a police officer and Alberta's policing watchdog, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team, has been called in to investigate, Savinkoff said.
RCMP do not believe there is any danger to the public, he said.
The area in front of the courthouse at 6203 49 St. is now an active crime scene, court spokesperson Olav Rokne told CBC News.
Around 10:30 a.m., STARS Air Ambulance said on Twitter that one of its crews had been dispatched to a "scene call emergency" in the Ponoka area.
Ponoka is about 100 kilometres south of Edmonton.
