The petition was filed by former UP Shia Waqf Board chairman Waseem Rizvi.
The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a petition filed by former UP Shia Waqf Board chairman Waseem Rizvi seeking removal of 26 verses from holy Quran. Terming the petition "absolutely frivolous", the Supreme Court imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on Rizvi. The matter was heard by a bench of Justices RF Nariman, BR Gavai and Hrishikesh Roy. "Are you seriously pressing the petition? This is an absolutely frivolous petition. Dismissed with Rs 50,000 cost," Justice Nariman said. Rizvi sought removal of 26 verses from Quran alleging that they "preach violence against non-believers". Advocate RK Raizada, appearing for Rizvi, told the court that the plea was "confined to government-recognised madrassas and institutions".More Related News
