A Tenacious Winter Storm Now Has the Northeast in Its Sights
The New York Times
New York City is expected to be spared the worst from a three-day storm that left freezing roads, stranded travelers and power outages across much of the country.
A tenacious winter storm that has already canceled flights, closed schools and created slick roadways across the South and the Midwest on Friday dumped snow, sleet and ice upon the Northeast.
Heavy snow is projected in northern parts of New York and New England, with ice the primary concern farther south, said Rich Otto, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s prediction center.
The Weather Service said on Friday that between 4 and 8 inches of snow had accumulated so far in pockets of New York State. Its office in Albany, N.Y., said on Friday morning that the city had started to see some sleet and freezing rain, and advised people to avoid driving if they could. Freezing rain in the mid-Hudson Valley and parts of the Catskills were forecast to continue through early afternoon before transitioning to sleet.
