This latest variant, he says, should serve as a humbling lesson for infectious disease experts. The variant "broke every 'rule' of pandemic behavior we thought we had established." He adds, "My thinking is this: After four distinct surges, each with a lead viral variant, why would there not be five?" Living in this new abnormal, he says, we have to rely on, instead of predictions, what we know today while "doing our best to dodge whatever is coming at us."
