65% teachers overburdened, only 58% participated in NEP discussions: MoE survey

Only 58% of school teachers participated in NEP talks, and 65% were overworked, according to the National Achievement Survey (NAS)-2021 conducted by the Ministry of Education (MoE).
The National Achievement Survey (NAS)-2021 conducted by Union Education Ministry found out that a minimum of 44% of school teachers in India do not have sufficient workspace whereas 65% of them are overloaded with work. It further found that only 58% of the teachers took part in the discussions about the National Education Policy (NEP).
More than 5 lakh teachers from 1.18 lakh schools across 720 districts from both rural and urban regions took part in the survey that was conducted across India on November 12, last year. The NAS was last conducted in the year 2017.
At least 44% of teachers do not have sufficient workspace while 65% of these teachers are overloaded with work as per the report.
The NAS 2021, further stated that 42% of the teachers participated in individual collaborative research, whereas only 58% of teachers took part in deliberations about NEP 2020.
Even though 97% of the teachers claimed that they had job satisfaction whereas a minimum of 92% of them said that there is a scope for professional development.
The NAS 2021 stated, “Sixty-five percent teachers engaged in formal dialogue with colleagues on how to improve teaching in collaboration with Block Resource Centres (BRC) and Cluster Resource Centre (CRC) while 42 percent teachers participated in mentoring or peer observation and coaching as part of BRCs and CRCs.”
NAS 2021 underlined that at least 52% of teachers took part in professional development programmes that were conducted by the DIETs, CBSE and NCERT.
