Today is the first day the IRS will start accepting and processing 2024 income tax returns. Keep in mind that April 15 is the official deadline for most Americans to file their taxes, but millions in federally declared disaster areas will receive an automatic extension until later this year. Here’s what else you need to know to Get Up to Speed and On with Your Day. The Trump administration is wasting no time fulfilling a campaign promise to conduct arrests and deportations of undocumented immigrants. Almost 1,000 arrests have been reported across the US amid President Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement blitz. In addition to “enhanced targeted operations” announced by ICE agents in Chicago, immigration enforcement actions were reported over the weekend in the Atlanta area, as well as in Colorado, Los Angeles and Austin, Texas. The operations are expected to continue this week. On Sunday, Trump also imposed — and then quickly suspended — a 25% tariff on Colombia as long as the country agrees to accept deported migrants being returned on US military planes. World leaders are gathering in Poland today to mark 80 years since the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. Nazis murdered more than 1 million people at the camp over five years from 1940 to 1945, part of the six million Jews killed during the Holocaust. The UN declared January 27 the International Holocaust Memorial Day in 2005. This year’s commemoration comes as the number of survivors is rapidly dwindling and as antisemitism is on the rise — especially in Australia, Europe and the Middle East. Britain’s King Charles, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron are among those attending the event today. Tens of thousands of displaced Gaza residents began returning to what was left of their homes today after Israel opened a corridor into the north of the battered enclave. Their return was pushed back by 48 hours after Israel accused Hamas of breaching the terms of the fragile ceasefire agreement. Tensions also heightened on Saturday after President Donald Trump said he had discussed his plan to “clean out” Gaza with the leaders of Jordan and Egypt. “I’d rather get involved with some of the Arab nations and build housing in a different location where I think they could maybe live in peace for a change,” Trump said of Gaza. Both Jordan and Egypt rejected Trump’s idea to shift Palestinians out of the enclave, saying such a move would displace Palestinians from their homeland. Kia America is recalling more than 80,000 vehicles due to improper wiring that can prevent airbags and seat belts from deploying in an emergency. The recall includes 2023-2025 Niro EV, Plug-in Hybrid and Hybrid vehicles. To remedy the situation, dealers will replace and reroute the floor wiring assembly, as necessary, for free. Owners will be notified by letters mailed in March. The recall follows one in November, when Hyundai and Kia recalled more than 200,000 electric vehicles to fix a transistor in a charging control unit that could be damaged and cause the loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash.
