Niagara police say they have arrested and charged five more men in the death of a 52-year-old prisoner.
That brings the total to seven, all of whom were also prisoners in the Niagara Detention Centre in Thorold, Ont.
As CBC News previously reported, the 52-year-old man died under "suspicious" circumstances in June, sparking an investigation. On Wednesday, police announced a 19-year-old from Welland and a 39-year-old from St. Catharines face second-degree-murder charges.
On Friday, the Niagara Regional Police Service announced second-degree murder charges against a 23-year-old, 29-year-old and 44-year-old from Welland, as well as a 23-year-old from St. Catharines and a 28-year-old from Niagara Falls.
They were scheduled for court on Friday in St. Catharines.
In an email, police spokesperson Stephanie Sabourin told CBC Hamilton police could not share what they think happened or why, due to publication bans and the case being before the courts.
