No less than five people have died in a wall collapse mishap, following incessant rains owing to a deep depression across the state of Odisha. The update came after the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on August 20 issued an orange alert for the Kandhamal, Sundargarh, Nuapada, Balangir and Nabarangpur districts of Odisha until Saturday afternoon. Also, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan condoled the deaths due to torrential rains and floods across the state and expressed his 'deepest condolences' to the bereaved families of the deceased.
In the first incident in Keonjhar, a woman died as the mud wall of their house collapsed, while her husband sustained critical injuries in Tikarpada village under the Mahadeijoda panchayat in Sadar block of Keonjhar. The deceased woman has been identified as Dutika Behera, while her husband was identified as Kanhu Charan Behera.

Following the incident, their parents were critically injured. The sisters identified as 12-year-old Niharika Giri and 4-year-old Suru Giri were reportedly fast asleep with their parents when a wall of their house collapsed due to heavy rain during the wee hours of Friday.
Reportedly, Anil Giri and his family members were fast asleep in their hut, when the muddy wall drenched in water collapsed on their bodies. While both sisters succumbed to injuries after being trapped under debris for prolonged hours, locals pulled Anil out from the debris and shifted him to Rairangpur Sub Divisional Hospital.In another identical instance, one person died, while two persons were critically injured in a wall collapse mishap in Madhupura village in the Baliapal block of the Balasore district.Similarly, a nine-year-old boy died after a bathroom wall collapsed on him at Nuasahi of PHD Colony in the Koraput district.As per the IMD, the deep depression over south Jharkhand and adjoining north Odisha and West Bengal was about 40 km south-southwest of Jamshedpur in Jharkhand. The depression is noted to move west-northwestwards across Jharkhand and adjoining north Odisha and north Chhattisgarh towards north Madhya Pradesh and weaken gradually in over 12 hours.

The deep depression is currently over Odisha but is expected to move to Madhya Pradesh. The state may see very heavy rainfall in the next two days because of the same. Bhopal too will see heavy rainfall tomorrow, news agency ANI quoted IMD Scientist SN Sahu as saying.
