21 new COVID-19 cases, drop in hospitalizations reported in Waterloo region Wednesday

There were 21 new COVID-19 cases reported in Waterloo region on Wednesday — and 11 people who had been infectious have been released from hospital since Tuesday.
The Region of Waterloo Public Health dashboard showed there were 17 people infectious with the virus in the region's three hospitals on Tuesday. That dropped to six on Wednesday.
There were three people in the intensive care unit. Public health notes that COVID-19 patients in intensive care may no longer be infectious with the virus, but still require long-term care.
There were 14 outbreaks, a rise of two from the previous day.

There was also an outbreak at St. Mary's General Hospital in Kitchener, although the total number of cases was not released.
The region's vaccination dashboard showed 76.56 per cent of the population, or 88.91 per cent of those eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, have received both doses.
