Over 200 egrets, including newborn chicks, died after a bizarre order issued by a municipal board in Assam's Udalguri district claiming that the bamboo groves in private lands where the birds nested should be razed because they spread Covid-19. Egrets are white colour birds that hunt and live in both saltwater and freshwater marshes.
