The raids come days after Sonu Sood's recent high-profile meeting with Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal
Tax raids at Sonu Sood's offices in Mumbai ended late last night. Income tax officers reportedly spent 20 hours searching six locations linked to the actor. Sources said the income tax department is investigating Sonu Sood's property deal with a Lucknow-based real estate company.
"A recent deal between Sonu Sood's company and a Lucknow-based real estate firm is under the scanner. The survey operation has been initiated on allegations of tax evasion on this deal," sources claimed.
Opposition politicians called it a witch-hunt against the 48-year-old actor, who has been praised as a "messiah of migrants" for his philanthropy during the pandemic lockdown last year, when thousands were left without jobs or shelter and stranded far from home.
Sonu Sood arranged buses, trains and even flights to take hundreds of migrants to their home state. He stepped in even during the second wave earlier this year, organising oxygen for Covid patients.
The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance, which includes the Shinde Sena and Ajit Pawar's NCP, is en route to a thumping win in the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly election, thanks to its two smaller allies.
The Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) leader said the results are not acceptable to his party and the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition.
The Adani Group said that none of its 11 public companies are implicated or accused of any wrongdoing.
