Ontario's Special Investigations Unit is investigating a shooting by South Simcoe police officers in Innisfil that left two youths injured on Thursday.
In a news release Thursday, the South Simcoe Police Service said its officers responded to a "violent incident" at a residential address in Innisfil, about 73 kilometres north of Toronto.
The SIU said there was an "interaction" between police and the youths outside a home on Shoreview Drive at about 3:30 p.m.
"Officers discharged their firearms at the youths," the SIU said in the post.
Police say the young people suffered serious and life-threatening injuries.
One was taken to hospital in Barrie, while the other was taken to hospital in Toronto, the SIU said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.
The South Simcoe police have requested that the Ontario Provincial Police to conduct a parallel investigation in the incident. They said they could not comment further because the SIU has invoked its mandate.
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of police officers that may have resulted in death, injury or the discharge of a firearm, or led to allegations of sexual assault.
