
2 killed in police firing in Assam, death toll rises to 51 in one year

Two men were killed in police firing in Assam on Sunday. The total number of deaths since May 2021 caused by police firing has risen to 51.
Two men arrested in connection with several cases of extortion and vehicle lifting in Assam’s Barak Valley were killed in police firing on Sunday. According to the police, they tried to escape from police custody.
Earlier, an affidavit submitted by the Assam government to the Guwahati High Court revealed that a total of 51 people have died and an additional 139 were injured during police action since May 2021.

A team of Assam Police arrested Kamrul Islam alias Lakoi (35), Abul Hussain Barbhuya alias Abu (26) and Anowar Hussain Laskar alias Apu (23), from the Jorabat area in Kamrup Metropolitan district on Saturday.
They were being taken to Silchar via Meghalaya when two of the accused, Kamrul Islam and Anowar Hussain, allegedly tried to escape from police custody. The police opened fire at them after they refused to stop running.
One of the men received bullet injuries in his chest and lower abdomen, while the other was hit by bullets in his lower back and right shoulder.
Both the injured were immediately rushed to the nearby Primary Health Care (PHC) centre in Kalain, after which the doctors referred them to the Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH), where they were declared brought dead.
