In Tamil Nadu's Nagapattinam, a 19-year-old physiotherapy student died by suicide after college authorities allegedly hurled casteist slurs at her and harassed her over non-payment of fees.
The 19-year-old, identified as Subashini, was studying physiotherapy at a private college. A teacher allegedly used a casteist slur against her and made her stand outside the classroom.
The student's parents staged a protest against the college authorities and demanded strict action. They have refused to allow an autopsy to be conducted until the accused are arrested.
Following the family's complaint, three people, including the college's chairman, have been booked under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.
