As major banks started delivering $1,400 stimulus checks this month, the timing of the checks has been an issue of concern to many people who are struggling with bills as the economy remains hobbled by the coronavirus pandemic.
The Internal Revenue Service on Wednesday said it had delivered 90 million payments worth a combined $242 billion in its first batch of checks, while another 150,000 checks worth about $442 million were sent via mail. On March 15, IRS and Treasury officials said about 100 million checks would be distributed within 10 days. On Monday, the IRS said it will deliver another batch of checks on March 24, although many of them will be paper checks or pre-paid debit cards that will be mailed to recipients. Among those still waiting for payments are some Social Security recipients, who have reached out to CBS MoneyWatch with concerns about delays.The Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday that the U.S. food supply is still "one of the safest in the world," in the wake of a number of foodborne disease outbreaks affecting items ranging from organic carrots to deli meats to McDonald's Quarter Pounders. E. coli, listeria and other contaminants have sickened thousands of people and forced a number of recalls in recent months.
