Yumi's Cell 2 stars Park Jinyoung and Kim Go Eun in lead roles. The first two episodes make you root for the duo, thanks to their effortless chemistry.
It is never easy to move on from a recent heartbreak and the first episode of Yumi's Cells 2 picks up exactly from that emotionally exhausting feeling of breakup from the first season. Yumi's Cells left us at a turning point in Season 1 with Yumi (Kim Go Eun) and Gu Wung (Ahn Bo Hyun) going through a breakup. Yumi's Cells 2 brings Yumi's scattered feelings in focus, but this time with Yoo Ba Bi as the potential partner.
Yumi is lost in the first episode. From stalking her ex's social media handle, trying to reach out to him, spending sleepless nights to totally switching off from everyone, she does everything one would call a cliche to get over her breakup. Yumi's love cells were again in a coma, much like how the first season began. In the first season, while Yumi's love cell had suffered trauma because of her partner for seven years cheating on her, this time, it was different. While Yumi struggles with her emotions, enters Yoo Ba Bi, her co-worker, who charms her with his easy persona.
While she is out for a live concert, Yumi's heart does a summersault as Yoo Ba Bi confesses his feelings to her over an ice cream date. The confession destroys Yumi's cells' conviction with discourse over their next step. The confusion and dilemma shared by Yumi's cells make for fun interaction. Yoo Ba Bi is a likeable character, but Yumi's heart is still healing. However, it is not easy for even Yumi to overlook how cool Ba Bi is.
There is so much to like in the first two episodes. Following a similar pattern from the first season, Yumi is seen being controlled by the innumerable cells. Dominated by her sensitivity, love and reason cells, Yumi is off to a road to explore her emotions again. There is an arch that you see with Yumi this season. While the last season saw Yumi acting out of wit many-a-times, this season she seems slightly more outgoing. Kim Go Eun fits right into Yumi again. There is a sense of innocence that Go Eun carried which is easy to watch on screen. The complexity of her emotions and interactions of her cells keeps the show light-hearted.
What adds an additional charm to the series is Jinyoung. He has evolved as an actor. Who started as the second lead character in Yumi's Cells has now become the central character this season. It is not difficult to fall for Jinyoung's charismatic presence on screen. His chemistry with Kim Go Eun is quite palpable and convincing. There is an unsaid comfort that you witness between the two which instantly brings a smile to our faces. The scene involving an umbrella and rain, which makes a cynical Yumi's heart beat louder, will make your romantic cells happy too.
The OST of the show, 'I'll be your/The Moon', sung by Jinyoung himself, blends perfectly well with the mood. However, we are yet to get a sneakpeek into the village cell of Yoo Ba Bi, just like we did of Wung's in the first season.
We are already rooting for Yoo Ba Bi and Yumi's love cells to meet this season. What about you?
