Indian Coast Guard apprehends two Bangladeshi fishing trawlers and 78 fisherfolk for unauthorized fishing in Indian waters.
In a significant operation, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) on December 9 had apprehended two Bangladeshi fishing trawlers along with 78 fisherfolk onboard.
The two trawlers namely FV Laila-2 and FV Meghna-5 were reportedly engaged in unauthorised fishing on Indian waters. Both trawlers were found to be registered in Bangladesh.
According to ICG sources, FV Laila-2 was carrying 41 crew members and FV Meghna-5 was carrying 37 crew members on board. All 78 fisherfolk have been apprehended along with the two trawlers on December 9.
“The ICG Ship Amogh, while on patrol along the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL), identified suspicious activity within the Indian Maritime Zone,” ICG sources said. “The ICG ship intercepted two Bangladesh fishing trawlers engaged in unauthorised fishing activities within India waters.”
ICG sources further said the trawlers were inspected at sea and subsequently booked under the Maritime Zones of India Act, 1981. The two seized vessels were then escorted to Paradip for further investigation.
This comes amidst ongoing tensions in both West Bengal and Bangladesh following reports of atrocities on religious minorities in the neighbouring country.
Last month, Kolkata Police arrested a former Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader from the city. Four Bangladeshi nationals were also arrested from Nadia.
