A Tamil Nadu man detained for questioning died on Monday. His family has alleged custodial death.
A 44-year-old man, who was detained for questioning, died on Monday, June 14. Siva Subramanian's family has alleged custodial death.
He was a resident of Panangattur and was working for a cycle company. He had accompanied his brother Ganesh along with Rajagopal to meet Venakatesh, who had borrowed Rs 95,000 from Ganesh.
An argument followed and it ended up in a fist fight. Venkatesh and his mother Vijaya were hurt and hospitalised.
Based on Venkatesh’s complaint, Siva Subramanian was arrested by police who then sent him to Nagapattinam sub-jail. Police claim that Siva Subramanian had fits and was taken to Nagapattinam Government hospital but soon passed away.
While officials are waiting for the autopsy report, Siva Subramanian’s family has alleged that it was a custodial death.
Reacting to this issue, Tamil Nadu BJP President Annamalai claimed that the police department, which is handled by CM MK Stalin, has sown seeds of fear among the public.
“In two days, two lockup deaths. Rajasekar yesterday, Siva Subramanian today. The police department, which is under the direct control of the chief minister, has sown fear that if anyone goes to the police station they will not return alive! Seven lock deaths in the last one year. What is the status of the commission to be set up for reforming the police? Is there a government functioning in Tamil Nadu?” Annamalai tweeted.
